Thorascopic Lobectomy
Thorascopic lobectomy is an important advancement in the surgical
treatment of cancer patients. Traditional procedures used by surgeons
to remove a lung tumor can be tough on patients and require a hospital
stay of up to a week. A thorascopic lobectomy offers lung cancer patients
a less painful, shorter recovery time with the same success rate.
While a traditional lobectomy requires a chest incision that splits
muscle and spreads the ribs, the thorascopic lobectomy is a minimally
invasive approach. The surgeon makes two small incisions, each less
than two inches long, and uses special instruments to reach the
lungs. The surgeon uses a thoracoscope, which is a thin video instrument
with a small camera at the tip. It transmits a picture of the inside
of the chest on a video monitor, so the surgeon can view the inside
of the chest while performing the procedure.
